Begin with a simple timeline

Write down the important events in your own words. You do not need legal language or a perfectly organized file. A short outline can help you remember what you want to discuss.

Bring your questions

Ask about the lawyer’s relevant experience, who would handle your matter, how communication works, and what the next step would involve. Ask about consultation charges before the appointment.

Keep sensitive information private

Ask the office which records would be useful and how they should be shared. Do not send medical records or other confidential information through an unverified email address or an unsecured form.

Understand what happens next

Before hiring a lawyer, clarify the scope of representation, the fee arrangement, expenses, and your responsibilities. Take time to read and understand any agreement.
