Ask about the arrangement

Lawyers may use different fee arrangements. Ask how the proposed arrangement works, whether there is a consultation fee, and when any payment would be due.

Separate fees from expenses

Court costs, records, and other expenses may be treated separately from legal fees. Ask which expenses you could be responsible for, how they are approved, and when they are paid.

Discuss contingency terms

If a contingency arrangement is offered, understand the percentage, what amount it applies to, and how expenses are handled. Do not assume that every arrangement has the same terms.

Get the terms in writing

Read the agreement carefully and ask about anything that is unclear. This website does not quote a fee or offer a particular fee arrangement.
